IC INFORMATION
Characters Name: Masaki Kariya
Age: 13
Canon Point: After winning Holy Road (end of episode 45).
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Orientation: Ambiguous. The only interest Kariya shows in a female is a celebrity, but it is only in one episode. He spends a large amount of his attention on Kirino. Kariya is said to be the type who bullies the one he likes, and his bullying goes the farthest toward Kirino. He seems to enjoy bothering Kirino the most out of the rest of the team, but at their last game, Kariya goes out of his way to assist him. It is difficult to say for sure exactly what his orientation is.
History: Inazuma Eleven Wiki
Appearance: Here
Personality:
Kariya's personality can be perceived in three different lights: his exceedingly kind side, his rude and outspoken side, and his true personality. Of the three, he tends to fall back on being rude most of all. He enjoys angering people and causing confrontation if he doesn't particularly like them. For others, he'll pull (mostly) harmless pranks on them.
After his parents left him at an orphanage, The Sun Garden, Kariya became lonely and was unable to trust others. He chose to keep to himself, and is seen sitting by himself while other children at the orphanage are playing. Two years later at age thirteen, this still deeply affects him, although he hides it well. Rather than avoiding others, he tests them. He sees how far they will go for him and themselves, but also seems confused while observing. Sometimes he appears to believe he is above everyone else, saying how pointless and wasteful being kind is. Despite this, Kariya is said by Endou to be "gentle" and "kindhearted," based on how he plays soccer. Kariya, however, never admits to this. He always denies being trustful or pleasant to others, as he doesn't believe it is something he is capable of.
Kariya can be awkward in social situations, as he is unsure of how to act. After spending much of his time by himself, or not enjoying company, since he was eleven, his social skills are lacking. When at Tenma's house, he seems confused as to how people can hang out and joke like Tenma, Aoi, and Shinsuke can. He doesn't say much, instead observing how they act toward each other and commenting about it to himself.
As he isn't used to interacting with others, he can have trouble working with others as well. Upon first joining Raimon's team, he believes he can play however he wishes, throwing the team off balance and making some of his teammates suspicious. When first confronted by Kirino about his rough plays, Kariya takes an immediate dislike to him. He is used to acting on his own, and dislikes being told by others what he should and shouldn't do.
A recurring conflict within the relationship between Kariya and Kirino is trust. Both being defenders, they need to rely on each other and believe in what the other is doing in order to fully benefit the team. Kirino, however, is immediately wary of Kariya because of how he plays. In reaction to this tension, Kariya pushes Kirino to see if he can reach his breaking point. This leads to several confrontations, all instigated by Kariya. Kariya prevented Kirino from playing to the best of his abilities, going as far as to purposely run into him and step on his foot in the middle of a match. When forced to cooperate, they are eventually capable of working together, and Kirino thanks Kariya for trusting him. Kariya is unsure how to react to this, and claims that it wasn't trust, which Kirino finds amusing. Kariya had earlier made a comment of how it was "awesome" that Kirino said he would trust him, in a condescending way. Kirino thanking him is ultimately the end of their feud, and Kariya's antics cease. They are rarely seen criticizing each other in a light-hearted manner, with no ill feelings. When Kariya is around most people, he comments in his head about how they treat him, whether it's the ammount of pressure they're putting on him or how stupid they make themselves look. With Kirino, however, the only opinions expressed are through Kariya's direct words. He goes out of his way to show him respect in a mocking way, with much more effort than he does for others. Still, there is a small bit of trust between the two of them, even if Kariya refuses to admit it. Kariya was said to "bully the one he likes," so there is a possibility that he wishes to be friends with Kirino, but is unsure how to act. Therefore, he relies on teasing him instead.
Kariya's relationship with Tenma, Shinsuke, and Aoi differs greatly from his relationship with Kirino. Upon first meeting them, and for some time after that, Kariya pretends to be very agreeable and positive. He constantly forces a smile, and is seen turning his head and frowning when they aren't looking. The more time he spends with them, though, the more he warms up to them. The closer Kariya becomes with them, the more he teases them or plays tricks on them. At first, Kariya constantly pretended to be exceedingly kind, and made himself appear to be the victim in his confrontations with Kirino because he knew Tenma would believe him. He comments that Tenma doesn't have the slightest doubt about him to himself, suggesting that he is testing Tenma to see how far his trust will go. Despite his rough plays and opposition from Kirino, Tenma keeps his trust in Kariya. After being in games together, Kariya becomes closer to Tenma, Shinsuke, and Aoi. When helping Tenma and Shinsuke practice, he deliberately makes them look away in order to kick the ball directly at them. For others, this could be an act that suggests Kariya does not like them, but for him, it is the opposite. Kariya does not balance how he acts well, but when he is more comfortable around someone, he tends to tease them more often. Although he didn't say much while visiting where Tenma lives, he still accepted the offer to come, which speaks for his true intentions.
Kariya has a similar relationship with Hikaru. Kariya immediately teased Hikaru after he joined the team, tricking him into running into the goal post during his first practice. He believed that Hikaru would not be able to play because he had only started two months prior, and was testing him, as he had before. Hikaru, however, listened to Kariya without doubting him. He does not seem to have any issue with Kariya. Kariya and Hikaru are often seen together, so it is safe to assume that the two of them get along.
He does not often express it, but soccer is extremely important to Kariya. When he first arrived at the orphanage, he preferred playing soccer by himself to playing with the other children. When he first joined Raimon, he acted out and made certain players believe he had a different motive for joining. In games, however, his skills were apparent. He made sacrifices and put himself in danger for the sake of the team, which was noticed by Tenma and Kirino.
Kariya can either immediately rub people the wrong way, or make them believe his fake personalities. If he can tolerate someone long enough, he can be generally agreeable. This doesn't mean that he won't continue to tease them and play tricks on them, though.

SAMPLES
First Person:
[The webcam clicks on and shows Kariya, seemingly unsure of what to say or do. He lets out a sigh and scratches the back of his head.]
So, uh... Why exactly am I here? I've never even heard of this place.
[He might sound a little hesitant, but he definitely wants to know what's going on. He just isn't one for talking to screens.]
I mean, the house is nice and all, but that doesn't mean I like it here. I don't think anyone would really enjoy being dropped in some weird place. [He begins to speak quieter with his hand on his chin.] Then again, maybe if the house was fancy enough...
[Don't mind him, just thinking out loud.]
Third Person:
Most children would be upset at being plopped into a house with different parents, but for Kariya, it was more of a disappointment. He was not upset at physically losing something, but disappointed at losing hope. It had been two years since moving into The Sun Garden, and therefore two years without living with his parents. The adults at The Sun Garden were kind enough to him, giving a balance of nurture and space when he needed it, but it wasn't the same. Whether it was a result of his father being tricked into bankruptcy or his parents leaving, he wasn't sure, but he still couldn't find a way to fully trust others.
They probably didn't trust him, either. Then again, that wasn't exactly a problem. Having others trust him meant having them try to become closer with him. Some people were worth it, others weren't. In general, it was just a lot of effort that he didn't feel like using.
Part of him had wished he could open the door to the new house and see his parents standing there, waiting for him, with open arms. The more he thought about it, though, the more unsure he felt. He survived two years without them, why would he need them now? At the same time, they didn't have much of a choice. Maybe the orphanage was the best option. Still, children need parents to provide them with what they need.
But he wasn't a child. He could take care of himself.
